Frequently Asked Questions

In a nutshell, how do antiperspirants work?

Antiperspirants aim to stop you from sweating by blocking your sweat glands. Aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium tricholorohydrex gly, aluminum chlorohydrate, and aluminum hydroxybromide are the aluminum compounds found most frequently in commercial antiperspirant deodorants. When you begin to sweat while wearing antiperspirant deodorant, the aluminum reacts with the sweat to create a gel-like plug in your sweat glands, which prevents them from releasing the fluid. Aluminum also acts as an astringent, causing the pores to contract, further enhancing its sweat blocking effect. How effective the antiperspirant deodorant is depends on how active the sweat glands are, which varies from person to person.

Why should I care about sweating?

Sweating does a body good. Your skin is your largest organ of elimination for the release of toxins via perspiration. Perspiration is the body’s way of regulating its temperature. Sweating occurs when the body is overheated, whether by physical exertion, nervousness, or stress (physical or emotional). If your body is saying “Lawd, it’s hot in here, let me cool off!” then we should allow this process to occur. Our bodies need to cool down naturally and get rid of any toxins it needs to expel. The alternative is not so good – sweat-gland constipation anyone? Think about it, what if you never had a bowel movement…it builds up until the body finds another exit. It’s the same scenario when you use antiperspirants, you’ll sweat from other parts of your body, but the toxins that your body wants to eliminate have to travel farther and get in the back of the line to get out. This queue could be so long that the toxins never get flushed out of your body.

What are the benefits of using natural deodorant?

Sweating is a natural detox and one way you can help your body with this cleansing process is by using natural deodorant. Natural deodorants are made with plant-based ingredients that your body understands how to metabolize. Read your labels carefully though because they are not all made the same. Free of aluminum and other harsh chemicals your body doesn’t understand (parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates, and triclosan), natural deodorants work to facilitate the body’s elimination process by leaving your sweat glands open, allowing the body to release toxins effortlessly via the underarms. Natural deodorants also reduce your risk to illnesses, such as breast cancer, kidney disease, bone disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, they smell great and fight bacteria growth, so you’ll smell fresh even when you’re sweating. It’s a win-win for your body!Resources for further reading: Sources:

I’ve tried lots of natural deodorants and they don’t work. Why should I try again?

It’s true, people have been burned by natural deodorants. Here’s what we always suggest:

  1. Give your body time to adjust to the new goodness. If you’ve been using antiperspirants, then your body needs to detox and release the toxins that have built up. This process could take a week or a month, everyone is different. While you transition, reapply throughout the day as you need to. It also helps to be more active so that you sweat more, increasing the frequency of your body’s elimination process.
  2. Keep trying different natural brands (remember to read the ingredient labels) until you find the one for you. I promise you’ll find it and your body will thank you for it. And follow the label instructions, less is more.
  3. Listen to your body and pay attention to your sweat and what makes the smell change. Just because you smell more one day doesn’t mean your deodorant is failing. Think about what you ate, what your stress level was, how much physical activity you engaged in (or didn’t) and even your hydration levels. Your sweat is apart of your body, so the changes that happen within will be reflected when it comes out.

The label suggests reapplying the deodorant throughout the day, why?

I Love My Armpits and other natural deodorants work differently than antiperspirants. By design antiperspirants prevent you from sweating; how long they work depends on their strength. Natural deodorants do just the opposite. They allow sweating, which is a naturally occurring and very necessary bodily function. We don’t believe in preventing perspiration because your body uses this process to cool down and to eliminate accumulated toxins. The moisture produced from sweating in combination with bacteria growth is what causes the odor. If you find that you’re smelling yourself during the day, then you should reapply and let I Love My Armpits do its job of killing the bacteria. You’ll continue to sweat as your body needs to, but the deodorant will reduce the bacteria growth, thus eliminating your odor. Also, keep in mind that diet, stress, physical activity, illness and hydration all play an integral role in your sweat and any resulting odor.

I see that many natural deodorants contain baking soda, why doesn’t I Love My Armpits?

Baking soda is a superb deodorizer, truly. But, we don’t use it in I Love My Armpits because it is also a strong skin irritant for many people. Baking soda is highly alkalinizing and can adjust your Ph balance too rapidly when used regularly, causing rashes and redness.

Speaking of irritation, I noticed a few bumps after using I Love My Armpits for the first time. What’s the deal with that?

Sometimes the Bentonite and Sea Clay cause a reaction because they are pulling toxins out of the lymph nodes. We realize that rashes and bumps are unwanted, but they are a natural step in the elimination process. A major function of the skin, your largest organ, is to eliminate, which occurs through perspiration and eruptions. If irritation develops it’s an excellent indicator that their is an internal imbalance that needs correction.

Will the deodorant stain my clothes?

Less is more! Because I Love My Armpits is an oil-based deodorant, we do recommend on the tube applying a maximum of 2-3 thin swipes per pit to avoid staining. With this light application it will absorb into the skin like lotion or body butter.

Should you get a little excited and over-apply, launder your shirts by pre-treating them with a good stain remover or your regular laundry detergent for at least twenty minutes; a paste of baking soda and water can even work to remove the stains.
