When it comes to herbalism, there is no shortage of books, but not all of them will actually help you grow. That is why I created my multi-part YouTube series on Best Medicinal Herb Books.
Part 1 covers beginner-friendly resources that give you a strong foundation. Part 2 moves into the intermediate and advanced books that will push you into clinical-level thinking. One of those advanced picks is actually a 5-volume set, which means this combined guide gives you 9 essential herbal references in total.

These books are approachable and practical. They will help you identify, prepare, and use herbs safely while introducing you to the core principles of herbalism.
Body into Balance – Maria Noël Groves
A clear, empowering guide to understanding your body systems and how herbs can support them.
Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth – Dr. Sharol Tilgner
Part materia medica, part herbal preparation manual, packed with recipes and herbal profiles.
Alchemy of Herbs – Rosalee de la Forêt
Makes herbal energetics easy to understand and apply with kitchen-friendly recipes.
Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide – Rosemary Gladstar
A classic starting point for growing, harvesting, and making your own herbal remedies.
These are the books that made me slow down, stretch my skills, and shift how I approach complex client cases. They cover everything from Ayurveda to plant chemistry to advanced clinical protocols.
The Yoga of Herbs – David Frawley and Vasant Lad
Introduces Ayurveda’s whole-person approach and offers a deep dive into constitutions and energetics.
Herbal Constituents – Lisa Ganora
Teaches plant chemistry in a way that is relevant and directly applicable to herbal practice.
7–11. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals (Volumes 1–5) – Dr. Jill Stansbury
A mentor-in-a-book series with clinical reasoning, formulation strategies, and body system-specific guidance.
Medical Herbalism – David Hoffmann
A bridge between beginner learning and advanced clinical application.
Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy – Kerry Bone and Simon Mills
Highly technical and evidence-based, ideal for safely handling complex cases.
Jumping straight into advanced texts without a foundation can be overwhelming. By starting with the beginner set, you develop practical skills and confidence. The advanced set then builds on that knowledge so you can think critically, work with complex conditions, and truly step into clinical herbalism.
The final part of this series will focus on herbal books by Black authors and works rooted in African American healing traditions. These are often left out of the conversation, yet they offer invaluable perspectives, history, and practices every herbalist should know.
Be sure to subscribe on YouTube and bookmark this post, because once Part 3 is released, this will become your Complete 3-Part Herbalist Reading Guide.
