Thyme-Sage Cough Syrup

Gotta chronic cough? I got you! In this video, we’re making a cough syrup that’s delicious, safe for kids over year old, and made with 5 herbs you likely have in your kitchen right now.

Nobody likes a chronic cough. Chronic coughs are coughs that have persisted for longer than 8 weeks. I don’t know about you, but when I have a cough for a couple of days, I’m over it, so imagine one that’s unrelenting for several weeks.

This syrup will help soothe your throat and airway passages, breathe better, loosen and thin congestion, and it packs an antimicrobial punch to help your immune system combat any developing or lingering infection.

Watch this short tutorial and make your own syrup to kick that cough to the curb. Remember what herbal medicine teaches us: to make our medicine when we’re well, so that it’s ready when we need it. Our family is ready and this syrup will get you ready too!

Recipe

1.5 ounces fresh Thyme, you can also use dried if that’s what you have access to

.25 ounce sage

.25 cinnamon

3 cardamom pods and a dash of clove

My standard 16 ounce syrup recipe use 2 ounces herb simmered in about 4 cups of water or however much you need to completely cover the herb. Then I strain and let that reduce to 1 cup of liquid extraction. From there I add ½ cup Brandy or your choice of alcohol (rum, vodka and whiskey work well too) so long as it’s least 40% alcohol, and ½ cup of raw honey.

It’s ok if you want to leave the alcohol out. Simply reduce to 1.5 cups then add your honey. Be sure to keep it refrigerated and use within a couple of weeks as it’s no longer preserved
